Short answer: snap lids are held shut by friction, and friction gives way under pressure. A slide-lock lid has to travel sideways along a track, so squeezing the case cannot open it.
If you have ever found loose tablets at the bottom of a purse, this is the mechanism that failed. It is worth understanding before buying, because it is the one difference that decides whether a weekly pill organizer survives being carried.

Why flexing is the whole story
A pill case in a bag is not sitting still. It is being pressed by a laptop, a water bottle, a set of keys. A thin-walled case flexes under that pressure, the rim spreads by a fraction of a millimeter, and a friction-fit lid has nothing left to grip. The lid does not need to be hit — it just needs the case to change shape briefly.
A slide-lock lid does not care. The lid is captured inside a channel, and the only motion that releases it is lateral. Squeezing the case does not produce that motion.
What to look for either way
- Independent lids. One lid over all seven compartments means a single failure spills the week.
- A stop you can feel. A lid that clicks tells you it is closed without looking.
- Rigid walls. Thin flexible plastic defeats any closure mechanism.
- Depth that matches your pills. A pill sitting proud of the rim keeps a lid from seating — an over-filled compartment is no more secure than a snap lid.
